8 of the Best Family Friendly Staycations in the South-West

The year (years?) of the Staycation 🏖️

Anna and Little Cub Bertie are long term friends of Cotswold Baby Co. Anna loves to travel, (check out her blog or her instagram) and Little B loves tractors, exploring forests and playing by the sea! She’s written us a guest post in this year of the staycation, with ideas for coastal holidays in the South-West, with plenty of farm animals and beaches thrown in!

For all your staycation essentials, check out our adorable collection of farm and country inspired clothing. Perfect for a summer of #littlecub adventures! And don’t forget our award-winning wet weather gear from Grass & Air … it is Britain after all! ☔ 🦊

Over to Anna and #littlecub Bertie …

We love to travel, and thankfully we love to staycation and explore the UK as much as getting on a plane somewhere. I’ve spent a lot of the last year dreaming about the day we can explore further than where our legs can carry us from our front door! I’ve spent a lot of time scrolling through family friendly self-catering countryside nooks.

Here’s my wishlist!

1) Gitcombe Holiday Cottages, Devon

Glorious Gitcome House

We are actually visiting this May and I cannot wait. There’s a clutch of luxury self-catering houses on the Gitcombe Estate, between Totnes and Dartmouth. The estate is sprawling and even comes with an indoor and outdoor pool, and a hot tub and tennis court. And when it can open, soft play indoors as well as the outdoor play area. The cottages look perfect and there’s an amazing choice of local food and drink suppliers to help you out with the planning. A gorgeous part of the country, spoilt for beaches and crabbing spots too!

2)Trewinnard Cottages, Cornwall

I love it here and we will go back. The farm buildings in this estate have been converted to holiday cottages, and on week days guests have use of the stunning outdoor pool too. We stayed one spring a few years ago and loved the sun drenched courtyard, the woodland walks, and the pool. It’s in a lovely little nook not far from the A30 and the bustling north coast near St Ives, but also not far from the sleepier south coast around Marazion and Penzance.

3) Washingpool Farm, Dorset

Another fun website to holiday hunt on is Farm Stay and this farm had me at hello. It’s in Dorset, near to where we got engaged, and so you get the best of farm life and coastal life too. It’s a working farm and there is a restaurant and play area too. The two cottages look perfect for a family getaway and because it is just two cottages, my sense is that you’d really get a good sense of life on the farm during a holiday here.

4) Coombeshead Farm, Cornwall

A farm in Cornwall, ticks all the boxes for me! There’s even a restaurant. And the cottages sells itself as having all the space needed for kids to settle into farm life. Coombeshead looks like it offers the good life through and through. Not only that it is midway between the north and south coast of north east Cornwall, so there’s always going to be a good beach no further than an hours drive!

5) Symondsbury Estate, Dorset

We stayed here for a friend’s birthday a few years ago and it’s a great place for a group stay. There is a choice of cottages as well as an option to glamp. Our cottage had a pool and an excellent lounge space to spread out in, in addition to very well turned out rooms and bathrooms. We didn’t want for a thing, the kitchen had everything we needed to make a birthday cake too! And the Jurassic coast around West Bay is just a short drive away.

6) Loveland Farm Domes, Devon

I’m not sure I dare try and stay somewhere like this with a toddler, as I just don’t know how I would convince mine to sleep! But when I’ve worked that out these dome pods with sea and country views, in farm grounds basically tick all the boxes for me. They are cozy and they are quirky and there’s nothing more rural and chic than staying somewhere as unique as this!

7) Wellhayes Farm, Dorset

There are two stunning properties for hire here and they are dreamy. (There’s also another but it is couples only). Set on a lake they are chic and rustic at the same time and everything you’d look for in a relaxing break away from it all. This really looks like Dorset at it’s best. The foodie scene on offer linked to the property also looks second to none.

8) Gara Rock, Devon

Hotels that also offer self-catering are something I’m a big fan of as it’s the best of both worlds for a family stay. Any photo I see of Gara Rock is dreamy and the apartments they have for families are equally so. This place is on the cliffs with stunning sea views as well as being surrounded by farm land. There’s an outdoor pool for the summer and miles of coastline to enjoy!

The beautiful beach at Gara Rock

Well, I hope there’s something here to tickle the fancy. Given recent advice, I’m fairly sure that the whole of the UK is looking for the ultimate staycation and these are the ones that I’ve found that I think are particularly dreamy! Many an hour I can spend trawling the options on AirBnb, but I also like Cool Stays, FarmStay, Canopy and Stars and Conde Nast for excellent staycation inspiration.

Happy Holidays!
